Asia employees tackle waste and hunger in Hong Kong

Hong Kong, February 2, 2016

Around 3,600 tons of quality food is wasted in Hong Kong every day, a city where almost one million people live in poverty. Our employees in Hong Kong, worked with local charity FoodAngel to help combat the problem.

FoodAngel is a food rescue and assistance program that takes "Waste Not, Hunger Not" as its motto. The organization collects food that would otherwise be dumped into landfills to provide daily meals to thousands of needy people in Hong Kong.

FoodAngel and Aegon have teamed up to provide nutritional meals to some of Hong Kong's 1 million living in poverty

30 containers of food donated

FoodAngel is a charity close to the heart of our employees in Hong Kong. In 2015, our employees teamed up with FoodAngel to provide nutritional meals to some of Hong Kong's one million living in poverty. Every single one of its 185 employees donated to the food bank organized in the Hong Kong office. Aegon matched the contribution, leading to the delivery of over 30 containers of food to the FoodAngel kitchen.

To help understand what this means to the charity's recipients, FoodAngel provided Aegon staff with their nutritious lunch boxes during a company team building event.

All 185 of Aegon's Hong Kong employees donated to the FoodAngel food bank. Aegon matched the contribution.

Moved by the experience, employees have kicked off 2016 by volunteering in the FoodAngel kitchen, helping to prepare and deliver meals to those in need. Following strict safety protocols, the rescued food items were made into nutritious hot meals in a central kitchen, distributed and served to underprivileged communities on the island.

One employee echoed the feelings shared by all of his colleagues, saying that, "The partnership with FoodAngel is a tangible way of giving back to the Hong Kong community. We feel blessed to be able to help underprivileged people today, to have a future tomorrow."
