Since 2012, Aegon has carried out the largest global retirement survey of its kind. Conducted in cooperation with the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies® and Instituto de Longevidade Mongeral Aegon.
The survey covers over 15 countries and 16,000 employed and retired respondents.
Funding retirement remains one of the biggest economic and social challenges facing the world in the 21st century. Government spending on old age pensions already takes up more than 10% of GDP in a number of our survey countries including France, Germany and Poland, and this figure continues to grow.
As we look to create a new blueprint for retirement, which remains affordable and sustainable in the 21st century, we hope the findings in this survey can help governments, employers and employees work better together to make retirement planning a reality for all.
And the annual nature of this survey enables us to track the progress we're making in raising awareness of the importance of retirement planning, and more importantly, if more people are taking action.
Retirement Survey Reports
Each year, a number of retirement reports are produced based on the findings of the survey. The main Aegon Retirement Readiness Survey report examines our retirement aspirations, the actions we're taking, and the reality of those who are already retired.
A key aspect of the report is an algorithm which calculates a 'Retirement Readiness Index', a score on a scale of 1-10 which tacks how prepared we are for retirement.
We also produce a number of themed reports based on the survey findings. These highlight specific trends, such as the challenges facing women balancing family, careers and financial security; the attitudes of today's young adults towards saving for retirement; and the actions employers are taking to help their employees prepare for retirement.
